How is India viewed outside India?
As a Russian, I will make a list over my answer:
- Russians tend to think of India as a good friend of ours. Maybe, since the days of the Soviet Union to the Russian Federation today, India has been the only country that we can trust. Russian weapons are widely known in India, and many Russian companies are working in India as well. We are very friendly.
- India is the land of ancient civilization. Yup.
- However, like majority of the world, Russians also think that India is the land of slums and poverty, based on the fact they have over 1.25 billion people and a low GDP/per capita.
- Also, many people of Russia, sadly, believe, India is the land of raping women. Because of this fear of rape, not many Russians wanna go out at night.
- Indians have many appearances in the Internet worldwide. So many Indians. They debate economy, IT engineers, etc… Even call centers too.
- Taj Mahal - well, this is what hit us first. Then, later will be New Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. Also, cricket is so popular there.
- Majority of Russians also believe India is a full Hindu nation, based on the fact that Hinduism has replaced Buddhism as a sole religion in the 7th century and still exists today; or even the wars with Pakistan - a Muslim nation.
- Russian scholars love translating mystical Indian books for the young Russians to read. It can be traced to Buryatia or Kalmykia too.
One book I read about India, is the Ramayana. I am impressed on how India is so beautiful and mystique for me. This is what I know about India as a nation. Also, Indians are depicted in some books like Midnight Children, which I have read as well; and I am seeking some poems by Rabindranath Tagore. However, due to current influence of media and even, Hollywood to Western movies, India is depicted as a poor country despite the fact that they are now the 6th largest economy on the planet.
My apology, if I lack knowledge. Really, I found India, I found myself to be safe and quiet, then I mention.
